I know that most of us think of cats when we think of a “cozy animal,” especially when it comes to the white-haired detective! Those were the days! We now have young sleuths who balance their careers with their personal life. But, Instead of concentrating on the sleuths, I’m going to concentrate on their dogs. So, here are the mystery writers on the site that have included dogs as a subject in their stories.
The Pampered Pets Series (10 book series)
Caro Lamont, a former psychologist turned pet therapist, anticipates frantic dogs, a frantic dog owner, and even furious neighbors when she goes to Kevin Blackstone’s residence to assist him with his two unruly German Shepherd dogs. What she doesn’t anticipate is that two hours later, the police will discover Kevin dead, his dogs impounded, and that she would become a person of suspicion, at least according to Homicide Detective Judd Malone, since she was the last person to see Kevin alive (save for the murderer). Sparkle Abbey is a pen name for two mystery writers (Mary Lee Woods and Anita Carter). They’re neighbors, friends, and co-authors of the Pampered Pets Mystery Series. Sparkle (Mary Lee’s cat) and Abbey (Anita’s dog) are the names of their rescue pets, which inspired the pen name. They live in central Iowa, but if they could write anyplace, they’d be on the beach with their computers and either an iced tea or a margarita depending on the time of day.)
A Popcorn Shop Mystery (3 book series)
Rebecca Anderson had no intention of opening a gourmet popcorn store. She’s ready for her life to open up and develop following a disastrous marriage to a star chef. She’s returned to her hometown of Grand Lake, Ohio, with her popcorn-obsessed poodle Sprocket to launch a new company called POPS. Cordelia “Coco” Bittles, a close family friend who has always treated Rebecca as if she were her grandmother, runs the chocolate store next door, and the two are considering merging their companies.
Those hopes, however, are dashed when Coco’s niece, Alice, finds her on the floor of her chocolate business. Coco was the victim of a botched robbery, according to the local sheriff, but Rebecca isn’t so sure. Rebecca is determined to crank up the heat and bring the perpetrator to justice as soon as possible as suspicions start sprouting up all around.
