The best method to assist new authors succeed in the literary world is to preorder their books. Publishers may get a sense of whether a book is likely to be a hit or a bust based on those pre-orders, and this allows the book to rise in search results.

I’m a big fan of graphic novels, and lately I’ve been paying more attention to what they have to offer.

In addition to being an excellent educational tool, graphic novels are also a terrific way for me to improve my yearly reading challenge, especially when I am stuck in a reading rut and have no idea what to pick up to help me get out of it.

WASH DAY DIARIES BY JAMILA ROWSER, ILLUSTRATED BY ROBYN SMITH (JULY 5)

https://amzn.to/3lewk2n

Everything in this book revolves on the care of hair, but it’s actually just a propeller for the various stories, like a thread that connects them all.

Friendship and daily hardships are the theme of this narrative about four best friends and their close-knit friendships.

I adore it when a graphic novel makes a statement with colors, and this one accomplishes just that.

Excellent visuals to go along with a compelling narrative.

SPACE STORY BY FIONA OSTBY (JUNE 7)

https://amzn.to/3sGxwzr

That the world is coming to an end is one of my favorite genres of fiction. There are three timelines in this graphic novel, each with a primary color associated to it.

People can no longer consider Earth their home, and so they begin to migrate to other planets in outer space. Due to unforeseen events, an LGBTQ family finds themselves divided from one another and is doing everything in their power to reunite.

There are many heartbreaking moments in this narrative, but the ending is wonderful.

RADIUM GIRLS BY CY (AUGUST 26)

https://amzn.to/39rqF66

Another excellent illustration of the effectiveness of graphic novels in the classroom. To study about the “Radium Girls” before reading this story was a great experience for me, and I’m glad I did.

In the novel, these ladies, their solidarity, and their fight for justice are well shown.

Once again, the artwork is excellent.

WHAT IS HOME, MUM? BY SABBA KHAN (MAY 17)

https://amzn.to/39p7Xw4

An insightful look at immigration, identity, feminism, and the roles women are expected to play in society. It’s also an excellent depiction of the differences and possibilities that families face.

Even if it’s a bit more in-depth than the previous graphic novels, it’s still a fantastic read from start to end because to the artwork.

TO STRIP THE FLESH BY OTO TODA (JUNE 21)

https://amzn.to/3yEUBq4

A graphic novel for those interested in learning more about one’s own identity and the stories we tell ourselves to avoid disappointing the people we care about or to conform to the social norms in which we are raised.

Intensely poignant and beautifully illustrated comic novel.

To be released on the 21st of June.

GAY GIANT BY GABRIEL EBENSPERGER (MAY 31)

https://amzn.to/39uJ02s

This is another book about self-discovery, and the pages are drenched in a bright shade of pink.

That feeling of being an outsider for liking what you like is well-captured in this graphic novel about LGBT adolescence in the ’90s.

THE VERTICAL SEA BY BRIAN FRESCHI, ILLUSTRATED BY ILARIA URBINATI (JULY 19)

https://amzn.to/3lk5Axn

Graphic novels like this one, with their gorgeous pictures, are well worth owning purely for the aesthetic value they provide.

On the surface, her life appears to be great, but she suffers from a persistent mental disease that leads her to experience panic episodes on a regular basis. The story focuses on mental illness and anxiety, and the things we hide from the rest of the world in order to appear normal to others.

HALINA FILIPINA BY ARNOLD ARRE (AUGUST 2)

https://amzn.to/3FYtl7B

This is the book’s first time being sold outside of the Philippines, despite its first release in 2015.

This is a wonderful narrative about an American Filipino character, and about what it’s like to grow up in a culture you think you know well, only to discover that it’s actually full of surprises when you visit the country.
